Our training and mentoring programs for both graduate students and postdoctoral fellows focuses on teaching the most cutting-edge tools, and strategies for elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying both normal and pathogenic processes.

This includes access to 5 different core technologies hosted by the department, from structural biology (NMR, X-ray crystallography) biophysics (Center for Macromolecular Interactions), proteomics and metabolomics (Mass Spec Facility) and drug discovery (High thoughput Screening and Medicinal Chemistry Facilities). The latter, in particular, has greatly facilitated efforts to develop innovative new treatments for disease.

Graduate and postdoctoral trainees in Biochemistry have unique access to enrichment programs, including:

  • direct selection and hosting of two distinguished endowed lectureships a year (Horowitz and Lee Lectureships),
  • named travel awards to present your data (Nishimura Award)
  • annual award for most outstanding all round student (Horowitz Award)
  • an annual award given to a rising second year student that has chosen to employ biochemical, biophysical or mathematical approaches in their research  (Hibbs Award)
  • The Hibbs Prize for Research Excellence is a major award given annually to recognize exemplary achievement and research excellence to a student enrolled in BMM

Through these mechanisms, the program nurtures creativity, innovation, and leadership among its trainees.
