Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program

We offer an outstanding training opportunity with comprehensive clinical training in general cardiology and excellent opportunities in cardiovascular research. The primary goal of our fellowship program is to train excellent clinical cardiologists with broad-based experience and procedural skills.

Upon graduation, the majority of our fellows pursue private practice, with a significant proportion choosing further sub-specialization or an academic career. Our graduates have taken positions in a variety of attractive locations throughout the United States. We strive to attract progressively higher quality cardiac fellows from year to year and invite you to give our training program your serious consideration.

Program Aims:

  1. To train cardiologists to excel in patient care and scholarly activity.
  2. To provide mentorship and support to fellows in their personal career goals.
  3. To maintain a fellowship culture of caring: caring for patients, for each other, and about learning.
  4. To continue emphasizing areas of strength:
      • Clinical acumen of the graduating fellows is excellent and supported by a 92% board pass rate for first-time test-takers over the last 5 years.
      • Fellows continue to show continuous knowledge improvement as supported by in-service exam scores demonstrating temporal improvement over each class, stemming from careful applicant screening coupled with close faculty involvement in the education program and comprehensive lectures/conferences.
      • Supporting fellows in their pursuit of obtaining post cardiology subspecialty training in heart failure, electrophysiology and interventional cardiology.

Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program

The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program at the UT Health San Antonio offers a broad-based training experience in all aspects of percutaneous coronary interventions, peripheral interventions, and structural heart interventions; with emphasis on the evidence-based clinical practice of medicine.

The program is primarily based at two large teaching hospitals – University Hospital and the Audie L. Murphy Veteran’s Hospital; where patients with complex medical problems provide an excellent training opportunity. Fellows are actively encouraged to take part in clinical, translational or basic science research under the guidance of Interventional Faculty.

Program Aims:

The Interventional Cardiology program trains fellows to focus on:

  1. Choosing the appropriate revascularization strategy for the individual patient. This involves integrating the patient’s clinical history and exam, non-invasive and invasive imaging data, discussion with referring and other consulting physicians.
  2. Once revascularization is chosen, we decide upon vascular access, approach to revascularization including catheters, wires, interventional, adjunctive and imaging devices.
  3. The learner is also charged with assessing risk and benefit from the interventional procedure for each patient. Intra-procedural assessment of technique,  outcomes and complications is assessed during each procedure. Invasive assessments including imaging (IVUS and OCT) as well as physiologic evaluation is stressed.
  4. Patients are followed post procedure and evaluated in hospital and in outpatient clinics.
