3/24/20 | Important Message to the Research Community – Impact of COVID-19/Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other Materials

Dear Research Community,

The safety of all members of our clinical practices is a top priority for UT Health San Antonio. In this regard, the rapidly evolving scenario around the COVID-19 pandemic has created a nation-wide shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other materials that are necessary for the operations of our clinics and research labs.

Maintaining our research infrastructure and assets, including care of laboratory animals, breeding colonies, cell lines, etc., is critical to the mission and purpose of an academic health center. Nevertheless, as the coronavirus is primarily transmitted through close contact and large droplets generated through cough or sneeze and given the significant risk to health care professionals and patients, it is imperative to prioritize the PPE supply for our clinical care mission.

Therefore, we ask the research community to scale down their research activities and strategize the use of PPE to reduce demand. We also recommend reviewing your inventory and donating a significant part of your PPE stockpile (mainly masks) to our clinics.

For donations, please contact Dr. Jennifer Potter (potterjs@uthscsa.edu).

Please be aware that research-related PPE purchases and orders have been suspended pending review and approval by a point of contact (POC) in each School. A list of these POCs is provided at the bottom of this announcement.

Starting immediately, mask purchases by research labs will not be approved until further notice.

Examples of critical PPE and other materials in short supply are provided below (this is subject to change based on supply/demand):

  • N95 masks and respirators
  • Surgical masks
  • Procedure masks
  • Gowns (Isolation gowns, yellow and blue disposable)
