Research Community,

The U.S. Department of Commerce Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) at present has classified the virus that causes COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2 and its specific genetic elements, as EAR99. As such, SARS-CoV-2 and its specific genetic elements are not specifically controlled for export to most destinations.  However, certain end-users, end-uses, and destination countries may require an export license for the export of EAR99 items. Read the BIS notice for more details or contact Melanie Zuniga Rapp at zunigam5@uthscsa.edu with questions about how this may affect your SARS-CoV-2 related research.

While shipment of SARS-CoV-2 and its specific genetic elements may not be subject to export controls at this time, please be reminded a Material Transfer Agreement is still an institutional requirement. In the event any member of the UT Health SA community plans to send
SARS-CoV-2 or its specific genetic elements (including blood or plasma samples from COVID-19 patients or live virus vaccines) outside of UT Health SA, they must first contact the Office of Sponsored Programs at contracts@uthscsa.edu.
