Our mission is to provide a curriculum experience that expands the minds and opens the hearts of students to become clinically competent, patient-centered physicians who are responsive to community needs through service to elder, rural, minority, and underserved populations.

Our vision is to cultivate physicians who are expert learners, problem solvers and agents of change committed to providing socially responsible and clinically excellent relationship-based, patient-centered care.

Our program is designed to emphasize the continuity that family physicians enjoy in their day-to-day practice. Patients visit our state-of-the-art Family Health Center for outpatient medical and preventive care. When hospitalization or higher-level care is required, our patients are directly admitted to The Family Medicine Inpatient Service at University Hospital, San Antonio’s best-ranked hospital.

The Fellowship Program trains healthcare providers to become leaders in hospice and palliative care. Training encompasses the full spectrum of clinical care, from prevention to end-of-life care. This program trains palliative care fellows from the disciplines of medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, chaplaincy and pharmacy. The STVHCS/UT Health San Antonio program has more than 30 faculty members from different disciplines.

The clerkship is designed to give you a solid understanding of the principles and philosophy of our specialty. Family Medicine is a primary care specialty that provides the first contact, ongoing and preventive care to patients of all ages. This includes comprehensive, continuous, cost-effective, and relationship-centered care, in the context of family and the community.
