Her interest in translational research began during her third year in undergraduate school at James Madison University while she was volunteering as an Emergency Medical Technician in Bridgewater, Virginia. She began to appreciate how molecular medicine made a direct impact to the patients that she saw on the field and started learning about the molecular details of the products that she was being trained to use as an EMT during her classes in college. She continued to delve deeper into the opportunities that collaborative science could provide throughout college. Mrs. Stoja Payne worked in the Information Technology as well as the Physics department at James Madison University, where she learned basic coding and programming as she was finishing her Biotechnology degree. She took these skills onward to her first job as a lab technician working in Dr. Mitchell Smith’s lab at the University of Virginia. While in the Smith lab, she used computational biology together with her wet lab experience to help with genetic engineering of the LANA protein to better understand the protein’s role in Kaposi’s Sarcoma. She moved onward to further her benchwork skills as a Senior Research Assistant in Dr. Mark Shapiro’s lab at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio where she advanced the scientific field by researching the molecular mechanisms of Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI’s), with the goal of improving current TBI clinical protocols and developing novel therapeutics. Additionally, while in the Shapiro lab, she spearheaded a Mays Cancer Center project focusing on identifying novel drugs to disrupt the progression of B cell lymphoma. This is where she decided that she wanted to gear her professional career towards understanding the molecular biology of disease states. She started working as a Graduate Research Assistant under the mentorship of Dr. Alexander Bishop where her work these past two years have predominantly focused on Ewing’s sarcoma, the second leading pediatric bone cancer diagnosis in North America.
