Fellowship Objectives
- Provide fellows with a supportive robust educational environment leading to excellence in clinical MFM knowledge and skills related to prenatal diagnosis, genetic counseling, and care for complex medical-surgical complications of pregnancy while incorporating the ACGME clinical competencies, procedural experiences, and ABOG requirements.
- Develop fellows as exemplary clinical and/or basic science researchers through provision of training in contemporary research approaches, study design and implementation, grant preparation, and scientific writing.
- Foster development of fellows as advocates for patient safety and quality improvement through participating in and initiation of a quality improvement project.
- Encourage professional development through engagement of fellows to participate in an array of academic activities inclusive, but not limited to, journal peer-review, medical student/resident teaching, community outreach, institutional/regional committee participation, etc.
- Create well-balanced compassionate MFM physicians who strive to provide excellent patient care while maintaining personal balance and wellness.
Our MFM fellowship program has three major components: clinical, research, and didactic. The goal of the program is to train well-rounded clinician-scientists that are clinically and surgically competent, familiar with relevant laboratory procedures, and fully understanding of theoretical and technical aspects of research to enable independent study. Emphasis is placed on continuation of an academic career. Clinical, research, and teaching activities are given equal importance and fellows are provided opportunities to achieve their full potential in each area.
The core fellowship block rotations consist of 18 months of Core Clinical MFM Experiences (includes MFM Clinical – 10 months; Ultrasound – 3 months; Genetics/Genomics x 2 months; Surgical ICU x 1 month; L&D x 2 months), 12 months of research, and 6 months of electives (1 month required NICU) – See Representative Fellowship Block Diagram Below. Various elective blocks are available in fetal echocardiography, diabetes service, perinatal pathology, medical/surgical/cardiac intensive care unit, neonatal intensive care unit, antepartum service, congenital heart program, infectious disease service, HIV/AIDS service, or research. With fellowship director approval, other elective experiences can be coordinated based on the fellow’s interest and career aspirations.
