Call For Abstracts

Application Procedure:

Participants should submit an abstract of 300 words (see new instructions for electronic submission) that includes the title, authors and affiliations, background and purpose of the study, methods, results, and conclusions, as well as the name of the applicant and the category of award in which they would like to compete. Medicine, Surgical or Pediatric residents and students (undergraduate or graduate) can submit basic, translational, and clinical research, Quality Improvement project or any research activity they have conducted during their training. Projects that have been submitted to, or already presented at, a regional or national meeting (including the local Passport program) are fully eligible.

Every project should have a Medicine resident or faculty member affiliated with the project.

Eligibility Criteria by Submission Category:

Junior Faculty: Those at or below the rank of Assistant Professor with a primary appointment in the Department of Medicine or other Departments who are engaged in basic, translational or clinical investigation.

High School and Undergraduate Students: Students interested in health sciences and involved in clinical or basic/translational science research activity.

Graduate Students: This category includes students involved in Masters, PhD and/or MD/PhD research.

Post-Doctoral Fellows: Researchers who possess one of the following degrees: MD, DO, PhD, DDS, Pharm D.

Clinical Fellows: Department of Medicine or other Health Science Departmental clinical fellows at any level of training.

Medicine Residents and Medical Students: Internal Medicine residents and UTHSCSA medical students at any level of training. Participants are encouraged to contact their mentor and program director to assist in preparation of their application.

For applicants in all trainee categories, at least one of their primary mentors on the project should be a faculty member who holds a primary appointment in the Department of Medicine.

Awards Selection Process:

(1) Participants must electronically submit abstracts of their work to the Medicine Research Committee and present the abstract in the form of a poster (bulletin boards are 4x 6) on Research Day.

(2) Abstracts will be reviewed by the Scientific Review Committee for Research Day. This committee will be comprised of both clinical research and basic science faculty. Up to eight abstracts will be selected for oral presentations on Research Day. Abstracts selected for oral presentation should also be presented as posters.

(3) On Research Day, the Scientific Review Committee as well as our Distinguished Speaker for this year will evaluate posters and oral presentations for awards to be presented.

(4) Awards will be given in each category in the form of vouchers for academic travel or other educational/professional development expense with approval of the Vice Chair of Research.
