Residency Life

Overview

Our residents experience 3 years of challenging and unique clinical experiences all in the setting of camaraderie, wellness, and fun! San Antonio provides the perfect background for taking advantage of our 4+1 schedule.

Whether you are interested in outdoor activities, nearby wineries, museums for the whole family, a vibrant night life, an up and coming restaurant scene, a plethora of movie theaters, or just feel like staying in, our residents find many opportunities to grow as friends and become a large family.

Resident wellness is one of our top priorities. In fact, we have Chief Residents who helps organize and plan weekly, monthly, and semi-annual events. We are a diverse group of residents. As such, we plan out a diverse schedule of events for the year! Here is a list of a few of them:

  • Intern Orientation Social
  • Free Museum Nights
  • Fourth of July BBQ
  • Halloween Party
  • Christmas Formal
  • Graduation Celebration

Although we have approximately 104 residents, there still exists a strong sense of camaraderie within our program. We all work together and there is a true sense that we are all on the same team.

Outside of work we enjoy our monthly outings, which provide our residents an opportunity for some free dining and fun. Our residents are well known for their strong work ethic and dedication to their patients, and we encourage them to be just as committed to their own well being in life outside of work.

Mentorship

Our internal medicine residency is distinctive in regards to the relationships that exist between residents and faculty. There is a very collegial atmosphere here and our faculty truly respect each resident as a colleague, rather than only looking at them as a trainee. They are approachable and truly dedicated to providing the best experience possible for the residents they are working with.

Each intern is assigned both a resident mentor and a faculty mentor. Mentors provide guidance for our incoming interns to help get them started with research, projects, and career advancement. Mentors are assigned by career interests. Mentors meet several times a year with their mentees after an initial ice cream party where all mentors and mentees meet for the first time.

Local San Antonio

San Antonio, while being the 7th largest city in the United States, boasts a small-town feel. Mostly known for its tourism, San Antonio has a new, up-and-coming restaurant scene and a local entertainment scene with music, coffee, spirits, and outdoor activities.

If the San Antonio Spurs basketball team is not in season, we are only a short drive from the Texas Wine Country outside of Fredericksburg, the live music scene in Austin, and the beach in Corpus Christi. San Antonio is in the process of developing a network of hiking, running, and biking trails.

Residents often jog on the trails around the Medical Center or even the 13+ mile Leon Valley Trail or 13+ mile Riverwalk Trail. We are especially proud of the recently developed Pearl District – a 22-acre site complete with farmers markets, culinary destinations, 5-star hotel resort, night life, and splash-pad.
