Graduate Mentor of the Year Awardee Spotlight<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Dr. Robert Svatek, M.D., M.S.C.I.<\/h3>\n

\u201cBecoming the right mentee is just as important as finding the right mentor.\u201d<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1769622415161{padding-top: 0px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 0px !important;}” el_class=”.wrapped-image { margin: 0 100px 200px 0; }”]\"\"When Dr. Robert Svatek, MD, MSCI, reflects on mentorship, he describes it as \u201ca reciprocal relationship, one where both the mentor and mentee grow together.\u201d This spirit of shared learning and growth has made him one of this year\u2019s Graduate Mentor of the Year Award recipients, recognized by the Research Mentoring Academy for his exceptional dedication to the academic, professional, and personal development of his trainees. Dr. Svatek is a Professor of Urology here at UT San Antonio. His tenure spans nearly 14 years and includes his primary appointment as a Urological surgeon with the Mays Cancer Center. His research has spanned his tenure, examining immunological effects, bladder cancer, etc.<\/p>\n

Dr. Svatek was nominated by his research trainee, Dr. Shaun Trecarten, a student in the MS in Clinical Investigation and Translational Sciences program. In his nomination, Shaun described a mentor whose influence extends far beyond the laboratory or clinic: \u201cDr. Svatek has truly been one of the greatest mentors I have encountered in my training in becoming a Urologic Oncologist. He is an outstanding clinician-scientist and an effective communicator who listens with intention, whether supporting the input of mentees or treating patients with empathy and compassion.\u201d What sets Dr. Svatek apart, Shaun added, is his approachability and genuine care for his trainees\u2019 lives outside of work. From inviting Shaun\u2019s family to holiday celebrations to dropping off a homemade lasagna after the birth of his son, Dr. Svatek has modeled a mentorship style grounded in humanity and connection. \u201cHe was one of the first people my newborn son ever met,\u201d Shaun recalled. \u201cThat kind of thoughtfulness speaks volumes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Mentoring Philosophy\"\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Svatek emphasizes that effective mentoring begins with mutual effort.<\/strong> \u201cI used to think I had to find the right mentor,\u201d he reflected. \u201cBut I realized the more important question was, am I the right mentee?<\/em><\/strong> When I shifted my focus toward what I could bring to the relationship, everything started to fall into place.\u201d He sees mentorship not as a checklist of milestones but as a process of shared growth: \u201cIt\u2019s less about whether we achieve a specific goal and more about whether we grow through the journey. Mentorship teaches values that reach far beyond science, honesty, curiosity, and resilience.\u201d For Dr. Svatek, research and mentorship are intertwined acts of creativity and discovery. He describes science as \u201ca deeply creative pursuit,\u201d comparing it to art and storytelling, driven by curiosity and a search for truth.<\/p>\n

Guiding Through Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Svatek promotes a sense of calm optimism to his mentees who are encountering setbacks. \u201cIn research,\u201d he says, \u201cthere are many more failures than successes. The best batters in baseball fail seven out of ten times. What matters is how you learn from those failures and keep going.\u201d<\/strong> He encourages trainees to take risks, stay honest, and keep the work fun: \u201cIf it\u2019s not fun, you\u2019re doing it wrong. We should enjoy the process, even the hard parts. And we should think big. Don\u2019t just dream of getting an R01, dream of curing a disease.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paying It Forward\"\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

When asked about his proudest professional moment, Dr. Svatek didn\u2019t hesitate: \u201cIt wasn\u2019t when I got my own R01, it was when my mentee got hers. Watching her achieve that was the proudest moment of my career.\u201d His advice to new mentors reflects that same selfless philosophy: \u201cAs much as we strive for our own accomplishments, there\u2019s a unique joy in developing someone else\u2019s career. That should be the ultimate destination.\u201d<\/p>\n
