Research:

Dr. Li’s research has primarily focused on studying the molecular mechanism of innate immune detection of microbial nucleic acids in host defense and inflammation. Understanding the fundamental mechanisms of immune sensing and signaling of nucleic acids is of broad biomedical importance. In recent years, his work has contributed to two important discoveries: (I) The identification of bacterial 23S ribosomal RNA as the long sought TLR13 ligand. Of note, TLR13 recognizes bacterial RNA with an exquisite sequence specificity that is unique in innate immunity. (II) The first genetic evidence showing that cGAS plays a non-redundant role in innate immune sensing of microbial DNA to activate antiviral defense in vivo. In this study, he has also provided the proof-of-concept evidence on the immune adjutant effects of cGAMP, a novel second messenger.
