Dr. Chandan Takkar has accepted the position as Associate Clinical Chief for the Nephrology Division. She has done an outstanding job in the role of Director of Clinical Operations this past year and will now assume greater duties to represent the clinical enterprise for the Division, in coordination with myself. Chandan is a highly respected academic clinician and educator, and is passionate about quality improvement In all aspects of nephrology. With several key goals slated for Nephrology’s clinical operations in the next few years, I am very pleased that Chandan has decided to take on this position.  Please join me in congratulating Chandan as the Associate Clinical Chief of Nephrology.

Dr. Shweta Bansal has accepted an additional leadership position as the Director of Clinical Research for the Nephrology Division. Clinical research is a challenging goal for busy clinician-educators but is at the heart of academic medicine. Dr. Bansal is developing a national reputation as a leader in cardiorenal physiology. Shweta is the UTHSA PI for the TRIDENT Study (kidney biopsies in patients with diabetes), UTHSA PI for several industry sponsored studies and is a co-investigator on the NIH-funded Kidney Precision Medicine Project.

She has developed and led several investigator initiated studies, including a recent study on a new treatment approach for heart failure and diuretic resistance which has implications to change clinical management. She has over 30 publications in peer reviewed journals and chapters, serves as Chair-Person for IRB-2 and has won several teaching awards at UTHSA. As the first Director of Clinical Research for the Division she will mentor young investigators for clinical research studies and play a leading role in developing a state-wide nephrology clinical research network. Dr. Wajeh Qunibi has accepted an important new leadership position as the Director of Faculty Development for our Nephrology Division. This position establishes a champion for supporting academic career growth for junior and established mid-level faculty. Dr. Qunibi is a gifted teacher and expert clinician and has provided outstanding leadership in faculty mentoring for Nephrology faculty at all stages of career growth. He is also an accomplished scholar with over 50 publications in high impact journals and 14 chapters in leading textbooks of nephrology and in UpToDate. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Qunibi in assuming this important position.
