Process at UT Health San Antonio

If you are a physician in J-1 status subject to the two-year home residency requirement and offered a clinical faculty position at UT Health San Antonio, your department/division may consider sponsoring you for a Conrad 30 Waiver if your position involves working a minimum of 40 hours a week at a UT Health San Antonio facility that has been designated as a HPSA (Health Professional Shortage Area) or MUA (Medically Underserved Area).

The request for sponsorship must come directly from the hiring unit to OIS and must be signed by the dean of your respective school. The hiring unit is responsible for paying all costs associated with the Conrad 30 Waiver process, including application and attorney fees, as well as any costs associated with the H-1B if a waiver slot is secured.

OIS will answer your general questions related to the process, but will ultimately refer you back to the department/division until we have received a formal request to proceed with the application.

OIS will work with a UT system approved immigration attorney to file a Conrad 30 waiver on your behalf. Applications in the state of Texas should reach the Texas Primary Care Office by September 1st. If more than 30 applications are received during the window of submission, the Texas Primary Care Office will utilize a prioritization system to determine which applicants will receive one of the 30 waivers. For more information on prioritization and the application process, please refer to the Texas Primary Care Office.

Once a waiver slot is secured, OIS will work with the sponsoring department/division to begin the process of preparing and filing an H-1B petition on your behalf. You cannot begin working until we have received the H-1B approval notice and as of the start date on the notice.
