Changing Employers

The H-1B petition is employer and position specific. If you are already in the U.S. in H-1B status working for another employer, we can “port” your H-1B status to UT Health San Antonio. However, we must still file an H-1B petition on your behalf.  All petitions require full documentation and the complete standard process that applies to any H-1B petition. UT Health San Antonio should file your H-1B petition before you leave your current employer in order to take advantage of portability provisions. If you are waiting for your H-1B approval notice and have international travel plans, please contact us.

One advantage of “porting” is that you can begin working at UT Health San Antonio once we have received the I-797 receipt notice from USCIS, and you do not have to wait for the petition to be approved to begin employment. This also applies if you are leaving UT Health San Antonio to continue employment elsewhere. If this is the case, must notify your department and OIS immediately.
