{"id":383,"date":"2018-08-03T19:01:11","date_gmt":"2018-08-03T19:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.uthscsa.edu\/ois\/?page_id=383"},"modified":"2022-12-12T09:16:14","modified_gmt":"2022-12-12T15:16:14","slug":"travel","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.uthscsa.edu\/ois\/immigration\/h-1b-employees\/travel\/","title":{"rendered":"Travel"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\" id=\"wpb-content-root\"><p>[vc_row el_class=&#8221;far&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]If you have international travel plans while an H-1B petition is pending with USCIS, make sure to speak with your International Services Representative, as this can impact the H-1B petition approval.<\/p>\n<p>When applying for readmission into the United States after each trip abroad, we recommend that you carry the following documents with you to facilitate your reentry into the United States:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Valid passport and valid H-1B visa;<\/li>\n<li>Original Form I-797 Approval Notice;<\/li>\n<li>Copy of H-1B petition as filed;<\/li>\n<li>Letter of employment verification from your division chief, department chair, or dean on letterhead or from the Office of Human Resources; and<\/li>\n<li>Copy of three most recent pay statements.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Passport<\/h3>\n<p>Whenever you enter the U.S., your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the end date of your H-1B approval notice.\u00a0 For some countries that have specific treaties with the U.S., your passport must only be valid until the end date on your approval notice.\u00a0 Please go the U.S. Department of State\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>,\u00a0to see the list of countries that this treaty exception applies to.\u00a0 If your passport is not valid for enough time, your I-94 Arrival Record will be shortened by the immigration official upon entry and you will need to file for an extension of your H-1B status or depart the U.S. before the new end date.<\/p>\n<h3>Visa<\/h3>\n<p>Unless you are a Canadian citizen, a valid visa stamp is required in your passport every time that you enter the U.S. from abroad. It does not need to be valid for the length of your stay in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>You can only apply for a H-1B visa stamp at a U.S. Consulate or Embassy outside of the U.S. You can find specific instructions on how to apply for a H-1B visa and what documents are needed on the U.S. consulates\u2019 websites.\u00a0 To locate the website for the U.S. consulate in your home country, please go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usembassy.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.usembassy.gov\/<\/a>\u00a0 It is your responsibility to read the consulate\u2019s website carefully and ensure that you have all the required documents to be issued the H-1B visa stamp.\u00a0 If you have any questions about the information on the consulate\u2019s website, please contact the OIS for assistance.<\/p>\n<h3>Automatic Visa Revalidation<\/h3>\n<p>In very limited circumstances, a valid visa stamp is not required to reenter the U.S. after a short trip of less than 30 days to Canada or Mexico.\u00a0 Please see go to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbp.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>, and enter \u201cAutomatic Revalidation of Visas\u201d in the search box for additional information regarding this narrow exception.\u00a0 Contact the OIS if you have any questions about this limited exception.<\/p>\n<h3>I-94 Arrival Record<\/h3>\n<p>Every time that you enter the U.S., you will be issued a new <a href=\"https:\/\/i94.cbp.dhs.gov\/I94\/#\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I-94 Arrival Record<\/a> and you must check it for accuracy as explained above.\u00a0 When you return to the U.S., you must submit a copy of your new <a href=\"https:\/\/i94.cbp.dhs.gov\/I94\/#\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I-94 Arrival Record<\/a> to the OIS.<\/p>\n<h3>Administrative Processing<\/h3>\n<p>If your visa request requires additional screening, commonly referred to as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/us-visas\/visa-information-resources\/administrative-processing-information.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Administrative Processing<\/a>, please inform your\u00a0International Services Representative\u00a0and department.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;] \n        <a class=\"panel no-equilizer panel-mobile text-center colorized\" href=\"https:\/\/wp.uthscsa.edu\/ois\/immigration\/h-1b-employees\/travel\/h1btravelabroad\/\" title=\"\" target=\"\">\n            <span class=\"circle close2x mid-icon\"><span><i class=\"fa fa-plane\"><\/i><\/span><\/span><br>\n            <h3 >Documents Required to Re-enter the U.S. After Travel Abroad<\/h3>\n            <p><\/p>\n        <\/a> \n        <a class=\"panel no-equilizer panel-mobile text-center colorized colorized-patientcare\" href=\"https:\/\/wp.uthscsa.edu\/ois\/immigration\/h-1b-employees\/travel\/h1bvisa\/\" title=\"\" target=\"\">\n            <span class=\"circle close2x mid-icon\"><span><i class=\"fa fa-globe\"><\/i><\/span><\/span><br>\n            <h3 >Documents Required to Apply for an H-1B Visa at the U.S. Consulate<\/h3>\n            <p><\/p>\n        <\/a>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row el_class=&#8221;far&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]If you have international travel plans while an H-1B petition is pending with USCIS, make sure to speak with your International Services Representative, as this can impact the H-1B petition approval.
