{"id":425,"date":"2018-08-03T19:45:13","date_gmt":"2018-08-03T19:45:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.uthscsa.edu\/ois\/?page_id=425"},"modified":"2022-05-10T13:18:28","modified_gmt":"2022-05-10T18:18:28","slug":"understanding-j-1-status","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.uthscsa.edu\/ois\/immigration\/j-1-exchange-scholars\/understanding-j-1-status\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding J-1 Status"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row el_class=&#8221;roomy&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]The J Exchange Visitor category was developed to implement the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act (Fulbright-Hayes Act) of 1961.<\/p>\n<p>Describing the purpose of the Exchange Visitor Program, Department of State regulations 22 CFR 62.1(b) state that, &#8220;The purpose of the Program is to provide foreign nationals with opportunities to participate in educational and cultural programs in the United States and return home to share their experiences, and to encourage Americans to participate in educational and cultural programs in other countries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>More than 300,000 participants from almost every country in the world come to the United States on J-1 visas each year.
