{"id":624,"date":"2023-08-01T04:06:47","date_gmt":"2023-08-01T09:06:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.uthscsa.edu\/ois\/?page_id=624"},"modified":"2026-04-29T14:48:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T19:48:35","slug":"cpt","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.uthscsa.edu\/ois\/immigration\/f-1-students\/employment\/cpt\/","title":{"rendered":"Curricular Practical Training"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row el_class=&#8221;far&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>What is CPT?<\/h2>\n<p>CPT is defined in the Code of Federal Regulations as \u201calternate work\/study, internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum which is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school.\u201d [8 C.F.R. \u00a7 214.2 (f) (10) (i)].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Before engaging in any off-campus activities like work\/study programs, internships, cooperative education, or clinical rotations, students must obtain authorization from the Office of International Services.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Undergraduate students are eligible for CPT after completing full-time studies for one full academic year.<\/li>\n<li>Graduate students may be authorized for immediate participation in an internship and may apply at any time.<\/li>\n<li>CPT must be directly related to the student\u2019s field of study.<\/li>\n<li>CPT must be an integral part of an established curriculum.<\/li>\n<li>Student must be in valid F-1 status and enrolled in a full course of study during CPT, period.<\/li>\n<li>The alternative work\/study, internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum must be offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school.<\/li>\n<li>A student may begin CPT only after the Office of International Service (OIS) grants authorization in SEVIS, and the authorization prints on the student\u2019s Form I-20.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To request CPT, please speak to your mentor or supervisor.<\/p>\n<p>Once our office receives all the required documents, the OIS will process the request within 5-7 business days. The OIS will grant authorization in SEVIS, and the authorization prints on the student\u2019s Form I-20. The student will present Form I-20 with the CPT recommendation to the hosting site.<\/p>\n<h2>Additional information about CPT<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>CPT is authorized per semester. Therefore, students must submit a new CPT request, including all the necessary supporting documents, each semester they request CPT authorization.<\/li>\n<li>CPT may begin on or after the first day of the semester. CPT must end before the first day of the following semester.<\/li>\n<li>A student will be ineligible for post-graduation Optional Practical Training if s\/he is authorized for 365 days or more of full-time CPT.<\/li>\n<li>If a student changes employers during the training program, the student must apply for a new period of CPT authorization before working for the new employer.<\/li>\n<li>The student may not begin working before the CPT start date or work after the authorized end date.<\/li>\n<li>CPT authorization ends if a student graduates, fails to maintain F-1 status, or transfers to another institution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221; el_class=&#8221;panel single-border colorized-border border-colorized-theme-accent single-border-top&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Form<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>CPT Student Request<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row el_class=&#8221;far&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;] What is CPT?
