The Department is appreciative of financial support for its endeavors. All donations in general, as well as to specific endowments and programs, are gratefully accepted.

  • Stanley I. Glickman, MD Chair in Ophthalmic Research. This endowment was established by Stanley I. Glickman, M.D., to support research of diseases that threaten sight. Dr. Glickman was an established physician/surgeon in his own right and had an exemplary 50-year career in the field of urology. The current holder of this chair is involved in research of the development and application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), spectroscopy (MRS), and speckle and optical imaging, to the study of brain and retinal anatomy, physiology and function in animal models and humans.
  • The Ruth M. Glickman Memorial Research Endowment. Established by her husband, Stanley I. Glickman, MD, and her son, Randolph Glickman, Ph.D. shortly after Mrs. Glickman passed away in 1993. This endowment honors her memory and the value she placed on education, research and service. Funds from this endowment go to support the promising research of residents, medical students, and fellows in the Department of Ophthalmology at the critical, initial stages and are intended to provide a good foundation for further eye research.
  • Ophthalmology Alumni Resident Education Endowment. An endowment established to support our residency programs and educational opportunities at the discretion of the Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and/or the Residency Program Director.
  • The Thomas F. Hogan, Jr. Distinguished Professorship in Ophthalmology and Ethics. The Hogan endowment was established in 1998 to support the education of ophthalmology residents in ethics of ophthalmology practice. Every year at the annual Alamo City Ophthalmological Clinical Conference, there is an invited speaker who presents the Thomas F. Hogan Lecture in Ethics.
  • Kenneth L. Piest Scholars Fund in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. An endowment established to honor local ophthalmologist, Dr. Kenneth L. Piest, by providing support for resident projects in the UTHSCSA Department of Ophthalmology in the area of ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery. Funds are expended at the discretion of the Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology to promote resident education and research in this area. Dr. Piest was on the full-time faculty in the UTHSCSA Department of Ophthalmology until starting his solo, private practice in 1995. He remained part of our program as clinical part-time faculty until his death in 2007.
  • Pediatric Ophthalmology Endowment. This endowment was established to support research, equipment, and other pediatric ophthalmology needs at the discretion of the Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology.
  • The Dr. J. Alexander and Dr. Wichard A. J. van Heuven Endowed Professorship in Ophthalmology. A permanent endowment established to honor Dr. Wichard A. J. van Heuven for his 25 years of leadership of our department (1980-2005). It was also named for Dr. J. Alexander van Heuven, his father, who had a profound and lasting influence on the career of his son. Dr. J. Alexander van Heuven himself was also an academic ophthalmologist–first as a professor at Donder’s Eye Institute in Utrecht, Netherlands and later, as a Clinical Professor at Yale University.
  • Thomas J. Tredici, MD, USAF, Medical Corp (Retired) Endowment for Resident Education.This endowment was established to recognize Dr. Tredici’s many contributions to the Ophthalmology and to the U. S. Military.
