Pediatric Blood and Cancer Center at University Hospital

UT Kids Blood and Cancer Center is the most comprehensive and advanced facility of its kind. We provide “one-stop shopping” for the treatment of young patients with cancer and blood disorders with everything from a dedicated lab and pharmacy to a teaching resource center housed within the unit.

Outreach

Our hemophilia team as part of the South Texas Comprehensive Hemophilia and Thrombophilia Treatment Center provides on-going care to children and adults in the Rio Grande Valley. Our comprehensive team including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, social work, dental, genetic counselor and research staff conducts a quarterly comprehensive clinic in Harlingen at the Valley Baptist Hospital. South Texas Comprehensive Hemophilia and Thrombophilia Treatment Center

The South Texas Comprehensive Hemophilia Treatment Center provides comprehensive care to pediatric and adult patients with hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, platelet and clotting disorders. Covering a catchment from San Antonio to the Rio Grande Valley, the South Texas Hemophilia Treatment Center is a federally designated Hemophilia Treatment Center and offers access to physical therapy, dentistry, psychosocial support and clinical trials. In particular, our team takes a family-based approach to treatment, through which we address all aspects of life with a bleeding disorder in order to develop an individualized approach to care.

Services include:

1. Diagnosis and treatment of bleeding and clotting disorders
2. Comprehensive multidisciplinary annual evaluations including physical therapy, dentistry, and psychosocial support
3. Genetic counseling and testing for hemophilia and other clotting disorders
4. Outreach clinics in Harlingen, and Laredo
5. 340b pharmacy program
6. Community outreach and education including schools, churches, and camps
7. Psychosocial support and counseling

South Texas Sickle Cell Center

The Sickle Cell program is dedicated to the evidence-based treatment of children, adolescents, and young adults living with sickle cell disease and thalassemia through a comprehensive program aimed at preventing disease complications, promoting health literacy and maximizing quality of life.

Services Include:
1. Genetic counseling of hemoglobinopathy disorders identified by newborn screen
2. Comprehensive annual evaluations focusing on disease awareness, infections and pulmonary complications
3. Transcranial doppler for primary stroke prevention
4. Hydroxyurea for disease modification
5. Chronic transfusion therapy including erythrocytopheresis and iron chelation
6. Combined Sickle Cell and Pulmonology Clinic
7. Community outreach including schools, churches, camps and support groups for sickle cell awareness/education
8. Psychosocial support for educational testing and evaluation of transition readiness
