The study will evaluate the impact of teacher training on students\u2019 oral health and explore how empowering educators with oral health knowledge can lead to better prevention, awareness and health behaviors among children. Participants are compensated for their time. A $300 honorarium is offered to participating teachers.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<strong>Why is the Tooth Project important?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"indent-list\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.9rem;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Texas has an extremely high level of dental diseases.<\/li>\n<li>Almost 50% of kindergarten children will have cavities in Texas.<\/li>\n<li>1 in 6 children have untreated tooth decay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Because children may visit a dentist only once a year or less, elementary school teachers can play a crucial role in educating students at an early age about oral health care, helping them establish healthy behaviors that will last a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What will be evaluated?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"indent-list\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.9rem;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Teachers\u2019 current knowledge of oral health<\/li>\n<li>Teachers&#8217; opinions of the training program<\/li>\n<li>Teachers&#8217; opinions of the students\u2019 curriculum<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Dental disease (gum disease and cavities) is caused by dental plaque and a sugary diet. The impact of oral diseases in children can result in pain, missing school, parents missing work, malnutrition and aggressive behavior.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How can oral disease in children be prevented?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"faq\" class=\"indent-list\">\n<ul>\n<li>Proper oral hygiene<\/li>\n<li>Healthy food choices (limiting sugary products)<\/li>\n<li>Fluoride use (toothpaste and dentist)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>FAQ<\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p class=\"large close\"><strong>Is a written consent required from the teachers?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No, we are not collecting any personal information from teachers who participate in the study.<\/p>\n<p class=\"large close\"><strong>Is written consent required from the students?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No, students are not directly participating in the study. There are no surveys for the students. The study is about training the teachers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"large close\"><strong>Are teachers and students given kits?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, participating teachers and their students are given an oral-hygiene kit.
