What to Disclose?

Conflict of Interest Disclosures

In general, a conflict of interest arises when external activities have the potential to influence an individual in a manner that introduces real or perceived bias into their work.

Increased attention to research-related conflicts may lead non-research personnel to question the necessity of annual disclosure of external activities that could present conflicts of interest.

Conflicts unrelated to research can pose risk as significant as those related to research activities. Even the appearance of a conflict can adversely affect both the reputation of UT Health San Antonio and the individuals involved.

Conflicts of Interest are mainly seen in three forms:
      • Financial Conflict of Interest
      • Research Conflict of Interest
      • Institutional Conflict of Interest
Examples of Outside Activities:
      • All outside employment or other compensated activities
      • Any financial interest in an entity whose business is in the academic, research, or health care fields
      • Income related to intellectual property rights when the income is received from an entity other than UT Health San Antonio
      • Outside Activities and financial interests of family members where there is a work-related direct or indirect interaction between the employee and their family member
      • Any externally funded or reimbursed travel costs by a for-profit or foreign entity; including, but not limited to, transportation (air and ground), hotel accommodations, travel insurance, meals, incidentals, or out-of-pocket expenses.
Conflict of Commitment

A conflict of commitment can occur anytime an employee devotes too much time to an outside interest/commitment that interferes with their ability to perform their UT Health San Antonio assigned duties.

We must ensure that outside relationships do not:

      • Improperly influence professional judgement.
      • Detract from UT Health San Antonio responsibilities.
      • Adversely affect the performance of institutional related roles and responsibilities.
