Shamim Mustafa, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine
Shamim Mustafa, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. She has over 20 years of experience in mentoring and training high school and undergraduate, and master’s students, and clinical fellows. Her research interests are focused on the role resident fetal lung mesenchymal stromal (stem) cells play in premature lung development and chronic lung disease associated with prematurity.
Dr. Mustafa also co-directs the Entering Mentoring Workshop with Dr. Oyajobi, Director, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs. The importance of mentoring in academic medicine is becoming increasingly recognized. Sub-specialty fellows are expected to mentor residents and medical students, without themselves having any formal mentorship training. To address this gap, Dr. Mustafa has developed a structured teaching curriculum for pediatric and internal medicine sub-specialty fellows to enhance their clinical mentoring skillset.
