Interview Visa Waiver Update

The Department of State has updated the categories of applicants that may be eligible for a waiver of the nonimmigrant visa interview (also called the Dropbox).

Effective September 2nd, all visa holders except those noted in the DOS update must now attend an in-person consular interview for visa renewal. These groups of visa holders will no longer be able to use the Visa Interview Waiver program to renew their visa.

Certain visitors renewing full‑validity B‑1, B‑2, or B1/B2 visas within 12 months of expiration, and who apply in their nationality/residence country, and have no prior refusals or ineligibilities, may be eligible for interview waivers.

What does this mean for F-1 students, J-1 exchange visitors, and individuals in H-1B, TN, and O-1 status?

  • In-person interviews will become standard, expect longer wait times.
  • Plan ahead to avoid delays with travel and return dates.
