Maintaining J-1 Status

J-1 exchange visitors are responsible for maintaining their immigration status. Failure to do so could jeopardize your status and result in accrual of unlawful presence. In order to maintain your status, all J-1 exchange visitors must adhere to the below requirements:

  • Refrain from unauthorized employment and only engage in activities as described on your DS-2019;
  • Apply in advance for an extension of your DS-2019 if you will continue with your program beyond the current end date;
  • Report any changes in address to OIS within 10 days of moving, as well as any changes in your email or phone number;
  • Notify OIS well in advance of any changes in your program situation, such as changes in employment, program activities, funding, or site of activities;
  • Notify OIS if you will be outside of the U.S. for any reason other than a brief vacation during the validity of your DS-2019;
  • Maintain mandatory health insurance coverage that meets the Department of State minimum requirements at all times;
  • Follow proper procedures if transferring to another institution;
  • Maintain a valid passport at all times, and at least six months into the future.
