Research Scholar

The J-1 subcategory of Research Scholar is appropriate for individuals who possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree to engage in research, observation, or consultation at UT Health San Antonio. A research scholar may also engage in teaching. If teaching or lecture is the primary activity, however, the professor subcategory is more appropriate.

The minimum duration of a research scholar is 3 weeks and the maximum is 5 years. Commonly used titles at UT Health San Antonio include postdoctoral research fellows, visiting students, and visiting scientists.

After completion of a J-1 program as a research scholar, the exchange visitor may not return to the U.S. as a research scholar/professor for 24 months (also known as the 24-month rule).  Therefore, if an individual plans to conduct research at UT Health San Antonio for less than six months, the short-term scholar subcategory may be more appropriate if there are any plans for research in the near future.
