Student Intern

The J-1 subcategory of Student Intern is available only to foreign students currently pursuing a degree at a post-secondary academic institution outside the United States, who will be participating in an academic internship program at UT Health San Antonio. The internship must fulfill the educational objectives for the current degree program at his or her home institution.

The student intern must currently be in good academic standing with the home institution and return to the academic program and fulfill and obtain a degree from such academic institution after completion of the internship program. The student internship should expose the participant to American techniques, methodologies, and technology and expands upon the participant’s existing knowledge and skills. This program should not duplicate the student intern’s prior experience. The maximum duration of the student intern subcategory is 12 months.

The hosting faculty member must ensure that the student internship program is full-time (minimum of 32 hours a week). In addition to establishing learning objectives in advance with the visiting student, the faculty member must conduct evaluations in order to ensure the quality of the internship program.

This category is typically used when a foreign student is enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in his/her home country. If the student is enrolled in a graduate degree program, the short-term scholar and research scholar subcategories are additional options for these students. Please contact OIS if you have any questions about the appropriate J-1 subcategory.
