ROBERT R. LEVERENCE, MD, FACP
Robert R. Leverence, MD, FACP, is the Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs for UT Health San Antonio and the Executive Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Texas Lozano Long School of Medicine where he also serves as the Executive Director of its 1,100+ physician, multispecialty medical practice, UT Health Physicians (UTHP). Prior to his appointments as Executive Vice Dean and Senior Vice President, Dr. Leverence served as the Chief Medical Officer for the practice. Prior to joining UT Health San Antonio in March 2018, Dr. Leverence was the Chief Medical Officer at the University of Florida College of Medicine where he served six years as Vice Chair for Clinical Operations and the founding Division Chief of Hospital Medicine, Department of Medicine. While at the University of Florida, he established the Division of Palliative Care, an Integrative Medicine Program, a Super-Utilizer Clinic, and a Global Health Fellowship.

Dr. Leverence received a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with honors and distinction from The University of Iowa and received his medical degree from The University of Iowa College of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at The University of Rochester. In 2001, Dr. Leverence completed the Primary Care Faculty Development Fellowship Program, a public health fellowship sponsored by Michigan State University Office of Medical Education Research and Development. After four years in private practice, Dr. Leverence joined the University of New Mexico in 1997 as an assistant professor in Medicine and Pediatrics. There he co-directed an NIH funded practice-based research network where he studied the office-based management of chronic diseases in underserved populations. He served as the Division Chief of General Internal Medicine from 2006 to 2011 and held the rank of professor when he joined the University of Florida in 2011. Dr. Leverence is a diplomate of The American Board of Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Leverence serves on the Board of Directors of the Bexar County Medical Society and is a member of the Society of General Internal Medicine. He received a 2021 Presidential Award for Distinguished Service to UT Health San Antonio for his leadership efforts during the COVID pandemic. Dr. Leverence was recognized by the University of Florida Department of Medicine with an Exemplary Mentor Award in 2015. He was also inducted into the AOA Medical Honors Society in 1988.
