This is a phone scam.

If you received a phone call from someone claiming to be a federal official (like the DEA or CMS) asking for controlled substance data, provider numbers, or money, it is a scam. Real federal agents never call to demand fines or collect sensitive data over the phone.

Why You Got This Call:

  • Impersonation scams: Criminals pretend to be law enforcement or health officials.
  • Stolen data: They often look up your public license or registration numbers to sound real.
  • Empty threats: They try to scare you with arrest or license loss to steal from you.

What You Should Do:

  • Hang up right away.
  • Do not share any personal, financial, or professional license numbers.
  • Report the call to the FBI. UT Police are aware of this scam and will receive information from the FBI, so it is ok for you to go directly to the FBI.

How to report a scam to the FBI:

Report the scam call online through the FBI’s Electronic Tip Form.

  • Provide the caller ID number, date, and time of the call.
  • List the exact lies or threats the caller used.
  • Document how they wanted you to pay (gift cards, wire transfers, crypto) – if applies.
