2022 LINC Seed Grant Project Data Leads to 2023 ASAHP Interprofessional Collaboration Research Grant

Each year, the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions (ASAHP) selects 2-3 projects to award the ASAHP Interprofessional Collaboration Research Grant. This grant program, led by ASAHP’s Research Committee, was created to support innovative research projects with the highest potential to generate new knowledge and paradigms toward success in interprofessional collaboration.

Drs. Catherine Torrington Eaton (SLP), Angela Kennedy (SLP), Selina Morgan (PT), Autumn Clegg (OT), and Leticia Bland (PA) have successfully secured the 2023 ASAHP Interprofessional Collaboration Research Grant for their project titled “Improving Communication with Aphasic Patients: An Interprofessional Experience for Future Allied Health Providers.” This project is aimed at teaching allied health students strategies that facilitate communication with the goal of improving healthcare teams’ communication with aphasic patients. The research study will examine which training components are most impactful in learning these skills. Findings from this ASAHP grant will be presented at the 2024 ASAHP Annual Conference.

This grant builds upon the 2022 LINC Seed Grant received by the project for “Improving Effective Communication with Acquired Language-Impaired Patients: A Pilot Study of a Clinical Interprofessional Experience for Future Healthcare Providers.” The team for this earlier initiative comprised Drs. Catherine Torrington Eaton (SLP), Angela Kennedy (SLP), Rebecca Moote (PharmD), Laura Novak (OT), and Leticia Bland (PA). In this feasibility study, students from the Master of Speech-Language Pathology, Doctor of Pharmacy, Doctor of Occupational Therapy, and Master of Physician Assistant Studies collaborated to enhance their communication skills with aphasic patients and to improve communication within the interprofessional healthcare team.
