Interprofessional Education Plans

Summary

UT Health San Antonio promotes social accountability among medical, dental and dental hygiene students through the integration of meaningful service learning while introducing the core competencies of interprofessional education (IPE) and most importantly the competency of Roles and Responsibilities. This community service-learning course includes a hybrid of 1) online modules, 2) virtual and didactic IPE team-based sessions, 3) overall guidance regarding service learning and global oral health practicums and 4) guided reflections.

The online module is a flipped classroom component due prior to attending the classroom activity. The virtual and in-person class meetings allow students to apply their knowledge while working together in smaller interprofessional teams. The students have an opportunity to reflect on their growth as future health professionals and leaders. The students review seven online learning modules with information relevant to community service learning. The modules are in Canvas and consist of case presentations and interactive modules. Some include an activity. Students must review the information in the module (and enter their name at the end) by the day before the class during which that topic is covered. The topics include Interprofessional Education (IPE) and CSL; Logic Model for Project Planning; Community Needs Assessment; Leadership in Community Service Learning; Ethics of Community Service Learning; Cultural Humility Training, Social Determinants of Health (SDoH); and 6:55 Narrative Reflective Medicine.
