Summary

The UTHSA Long School of Medicine and School of Dentistry implemented the Head, Ears, Nose, Oral, Throat (HENOT) and Cranial Nerve (CN) IPE Activity in 2019. The aim of this year 1 activity was to assess medical and dental student’s perceptions of the effectiveness of an IPE experience and attitudes toward integrating oral and CN examinations into the healthcare curriculum and it is centered around the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) competency Roles and Responsibilities.

In fall 2020, a longitudinal activity was started and incorporated into both schools’ curricula. The longitudinal IPE activities are currently held over two years. In year 1, medical and dental students participate in the head, oral health, throat and cranial nerves IPE activity at the School of Dentistry. In this activity, the students teach and learn physical examination skills from the other in the context of their profession. The year 2 activity reintroduces the same teams of students for a simulation activity with a standardized patient and an online team activity. Both year 1 and 2 activities include an orientation and team meeting prior to the in-person activities. The aims of the year 2 activity are to enhance IPE in the pre-licensed healthcare provider curriculum through incorporation of a collaborative and longitudinal HENOT IPE activity, to engage students in the IPEC competencies of Communication, Teamwork and to enhance student’s awareness of the IPEC competencies Roles and Responsibilities, Values and Ethics.
