Interprofessional Education Plans
This activity is embedded in the following IPE Plan for the current academic year:
Every spring since 2018, Dr. Farokhi and students from the School of Dentistry partnered with the faculty and seniors from the School of Nursing in an interprofessional education (IPE) program at Roy Cisneros Elementary School. This school is one of the most impoverished in San Antonio, home to 500-600 students (pre-kindergarten to fifth grade) and has partnered with the School of Dentistry for over 30 years.
The overarching goals of this program are: 1) to introduce our dental and nursing students to IPE through community engagement and experiential learning and 2) to educate low-income school-aged children about oral and nutritional health in an elementary school located in an identified vulnerable zip code.
In 2020, due to the constraints of COVID, the IPE team adapted this activity to a virtual format in order to continue supporting health promotion for this vulnerable population and to sustain this valuable community partnership.
