Summary

This activity provides a unique didactic interprofessional education (IPE) learning environment for sophomore dental and senior nursing students by way of introducing TeamSTEPPS concepts of teamwork and communication. In this training, IPE students learn about teamwork and communication related to safety culture and outcomes. The module includes leadership, communication, situation monitoring and mutual support by faculty from both the School of Dentistry and School of Nursing in individual (pre-session) and team settings (in session).

The training also includes ways of becoming effective leaders and managers by a flipped classroom reading (nursing) and training module (dentistry) approach (prior to the session) followed by small IPE interactive team discussions (during the session). The leadership topics covered have included leadership styles, emotional intelligence, reflective thinking, and identifying strategies for developing and thriving as a leader.
