Summary

Interprofessional education (IPE) and collaborative activities provide students with opportunities to get familiarized with the roles and responsibilities of each other’s professions. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most ubiquitous sexually transmitted infections. Several cancers including a subset of oropharyngeal cancers are associated with HPV and uptake of HPV vaccination can prevent infections and related cancer incidences. This pilot project aimed to advance an interprofessional experiential learning opportunity among students from dental, nursing and physician assistant, programs on HPV infection and vaccination. The project focused on peer-to peer cross training of related professional skills. The physician assistant students taught HPV infection related didactic content, best practice guidelines, and ideal SOAP note documentation to their IPE peers. The nursing students taught hands-on training on how to administer the IM vaccines. The dental students demonstrated hands-on training on how to conduct routine head and neck exams and effective patient communication. IPE student participants were assessed on their knowledge, attitudes, and confidence gained because of this IPE initiative.
